The Texas Medical Jurisprudence Exam

Who?: Physicians desiring a Texas medical license.
What?: Pearson VUE administers a 50 questions online exam. All applicants are required to pass the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Examination (JP) in three attempts with a score of 75 or better.
When?: You may schedule the JP exam once you have filed an application for licensure (forms and fees) and have received a scheduling permit from the board staff. Pearson VUE may be contacted at www.pearsonvue.com/texasmedicalboard or at 888-300-6228 to schedule.
Where?: At testing locations throughout the United States.
Why?: Physicians in the state of Texas are required to pass the jurisprudence exam in order to protect the citizens of Texas by establishing that newly licensed physicians have demonstrated competent knowledge of law and Board rule related to the practice of medicine.

Background to the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Exam	All physicians (i.e. out-of-state or recent medical graduates) who want to be licensed to practice medicine in Texas must pass the examination on Texas Medical Jurisprudence. The Jurisprudence exam, currently given to over 2,000 applicants (2006 data) each year. The TX Jurisprudence exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions prepared by the Texas Medical Board or TMB. In fact the exam questions are selected from legal topics listed in “Summary of Texas Statutes Relating to Physicians”. This pamphlet is published by the TMB. The examination not only covers primarily statutory rather than case law, but also some questions include well-established legal doctrines derived from court decisions. The Texas Jurisprudence Prep online review follow the organization and text of the relevant statutes, but in a high yield format. The study questions are a supplement to the summaries of the law. The study guide provides a summary of most Texas medical law covered in the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Examination.
Passing the Jurisprudence Exam	Before practicing in the State of Texas, the Physician must first pass the Texas Jurisprudence Exam. TX JP Exam Book	There are no 'official' Jurisprudence Study Books that are endorsed by the Texas Medical Board or TMB.
